As of December 2020, Ortega had a net worth of $79.5 billion, making him the second-richest person in Europe after Bernard Arnault and the third-richest person in the world.

Amancio Ortega was born on March 28, 1936, in Busdongo de Arbás, León Province, Spain. His father was a railway worker and his mother was a housewife. He left school at the age of 14 to work as a shop hand for Galaica Sorda y Castellana, a textile company in La Coruña. In 1972, he founded Confecciones Goa with his then-wife Rosalía Mera. The company initially produced bedroom and bathroom textiles before expanding into ready-to-wear clothing for women under the Zara brand name in 1975.

Ortega expanded Inditex to include several other brands over the years, including Massimo Dutti (1991), Bershka (1998), Oysho (2001), Stradivarius (2009), Pull&Bear (2000), Uterqüe (2008), and Zara Home (2003). As of 2020, Inditex operated over 7,000 stores in 96 countries.
